Making Himself equal with God - This the Jews understood from the preceding verse: nor did they take a wrong meaning out of our Lord's words; for He plainly stated that, whatever was the Father's work, His was the same; thus showing that He and the Father were One.
They had now found out two pretenses to take away His life: one was that He had broken the Sabbath - ελυε, dissolved, as they pretended, the obligation of keeping it holy.
The other was that He was guilty of blasphemy, in making Himself equal to God: for both which crimes, a man, according to the law, must suffer death.
5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Christ’s work runs parallel with that of the Father. The Father and the Son ever work in perfect harmony with one another.
5:20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth Him all things that Himself doeth: and He will shew Him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
5:20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth Him all things that Himself doeth: and He will shew Him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Greater works than these - Two of these He immediately mentions:
Raising the dead.
And judging the world.
5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will.
The Son quickeneth whom He will - He raiseth from death to life whomsoever He pleases. So he did, for he raised the ruler's daughter; the widow's son at Nain; and Lazarus, at Bethany.
5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
For the Father judgeth no man - That is, without the Son; which is another proof of Their equality: for that He does judge is certain.
5:23 That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent Him.
5:23 That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent Him.
As the universal Judge, the Lord is to be honored by all men, “even as they honor the Father.”
5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
He that heareth My word - My doctrine - and believeth on Him that sent Me - He who credits My Divine mission, that I am come to give light and life to the world by My doctrine and death - hath eternal life - the seed of this life is sown in His heart the moment He believes - and shall not come into condemnation, εις κρισιν, into judgment - that which will speedily come on this unbelieving race; and that which shall overwhelm the wicked in the great day.
